You will not survive Architecture school without this. Why? Because you will use it for almost everything you make by hand. It's your ruler AND a straight edge. You will need a straight edge for drafting, sketching, measuring, cutting straight edges for scale models, tearing clean edges of trace paper, smacking your studio partner for falling asleep when the final design is due in three hours, you've both worked all night, and it's 5 am..., everything.

This ruler is our favorite for a few reasons. It's 18in, not 12in. We have needed the extra length countless times for cutting all kinds of scale model pieces and even drafting our designs on larger sheets of paper. It's made of metal, so pulling a cutting blade along its edge doesn't carve away at it like a plastic or wood ruler wood. It also has a cork backing, which makes a HUGE difference when trying to keep the ruler in place while you're drawing (with plastic, it's nearly impossible to keep the ruler in place).
If you buy this one, you won't need another one. 6 years of Architecture School for a Master's Degree and we still have ours. It's not worth wasting time or money, just get the ruler you know you can trust.
