Let's get right to it. Drafting dots are better for taping down a drawing, but drafting tape is more versatile and can be used for a wide variety of purposes. Whether it's Dots or Tape, when you're drafting in Architecture School, you need something to keep your paper in place for the entire drawing. Drafting Dots are small pieces of tape pre-cut into circles that you put on the edge of your sheet of paper. Drafting tape is used the same way, but it's on a roll.
If the tape is too sticky, it will rip your sheet of paper when you take it off after finishing a drawing. If it's not sticky enough, it won't securely hold your paper in place. That's why we have a specific tape designed just for this purpose. So why are dots better?
Dots typically go only in the corner of your drawing and don't take up much space. They're less likely to rip your paper when you remove them, and if they do rip your paper, it's just a tiny little tear in the corner that can be easily trimmed off if need be. However, with drafting tape, it's basically a line of tape instead of a circle, so to tape off the edge you have to pull it diagonally across the corner:
Because of this, drafting tape is more likely to rip your paper and if it does, it will take more paper with it. That's why when we're specifically talking about the Best Tape For Drafting, it's drafting dots.
That said, for Architecture Student Materials, we recommend buying dots & tape or just tape. If you're buying supplies on a budget, the tape is useful for making models, quick repairs, temporarily holding materials together, framing in paint, etc. Drafting dots are really only good for drafting because their size and shape are a small fixed.
With that said, you now know everything you need to know to make the best decision for you and your needs as an Architecture Student.
